Abstract
This research analyzes the production of Black history based on the internal materials of the Associação Satélite Prontidão (ASP), a Black social club founded in Porto Alegre in 1902. The study is grounded in the concept of Black history as a specific epistemic modality (DOMINGUES, 2025) that, in opposition to "traditional" history, seeks to represent the lives of the Black population in a complex manner, starting from their own experiences and subverting stereotypes and essentializations. The main objective is to examine how the writing of Black history is developed within the ASP. To this end, the following specific objectives were defined: to investigate the narrative strategies for representing Black people; to contextualize the Black social club as a territory for constructing self-determined images; and to provide tools for composing alternative images in historiography. The methodology consisted of analyzing two sources of collective authorship from the association's archive, preserved by the ASP Memorial Project: Um breve histórico da Associação Satélite Prontidão and the section “A Nossa História” published in the club's newsletters (1997-1999). The analysis of the Breve Histórico focused on institutional memory and self-determination processes. The newsletter section was examined by selecting four trajectories featured within it, which illustrate: the creation of black heroes (in the figures of Luís Gama and João Cândido), the representation of women in positions of power (Judge Laís Rogéria), and the meanings of access to higher education (through the trajectory of student Anderson Cleiton). The research is anchored in a bibliographic review that articulates three main axes: historiographical practice; representations of Black people in history; and the post-abolition period, with emphasis on Black social clubs and the Black press. The theoretical framework predominantly mobilizes authors engaged in the production of Black history, also dialoguing with the concept of (in)disciplined historiography (AVILA, 2018; 2019) and the notion of liberatory images (hooks, 2019). It is concluded that the ASP operates as a fundamental onto-epistemological territory for writing Black history, producing narratives that act as tools for counter-hegemony, memory preservation, and the construction of self-determined identities. Thus, the research contributes to studies on historiography, Black history, and associativism in the post-abolition period, proposing a methodological reflection on an engaged and Afrocentric historical science. ...
