This work explores representations of the Palestinian diaspora in contemporary literature, focusing on the works Tornar-se Palestina (2019) by Lina Meruane and Against the Loveless World (2019) by Susan Abulhawa. Within this theme, it is understood that literature plays a central role in the construction of Palestinian national identity, particularly in contexts of exile, territorial fragmentation, and the absence of state sovereignty. The research is guided by the following question: how do the representations of the Palestinian diaspora constructed by Lina Meruane and Susan Abulhawa articulate the idea of a nation-state? The working hypothesis is that, although both authors mobilize symbolic elements of Palestinian identity in similar ways, their distinct diasporic trajectories lead them to different critiques of aspects of Palestinian nationalism. The general objective of this research is to understand how these literary narratives construct and challenge the idea of a Palestinian nation-state. More specifically, it seeks to: a) discuss postcolonial theoretical perspectives on nationalism, identity, diaspora, and literature; b) contextualize the formation of Palestinian national identity, both in the homeland and in exile, and the role of literature in its construction and maintenance; and c) conduct a case study of the selected works to identify references to the nation-state and the articulation of Palestinian nationalism. To achieve these goals, the study adopts the Critical Discourse Analysis approach developed by Wodak et al. (2009), with emphasis on the discursive construction of national identities. The findings indicate that both authors engage with the idea of a nation-state, employing similar symbolic elements of Palestinian identity. Their distinct personal trajectories, however, shape their narratives: while Meruane primarily critiques Israeli authoritarian nationalism, Abulhawa offers an intersectional critique of Palestinian nationalism. Thus, the hypothesis is partially confirmed, and the study contributes to the field of International Relations by expanding its analytical scope and highlighting the political potential of literary narratives in imagining alternative futures. ...
