Da faculdade metalinguística em Benveniste à proposição de uma Antropologia da Enunciação

Abstract

Este artigo investiga a noção de faculdade metalinguísticanos livros Problemas de linguística geral I e Problemas de linguística geral II, do linguista francês Émile Benveniste. Tal noção é apresentada na obra como a base para o entendimento da propriedade de interpretância das línguas, que permite o estabelecimento das relações de interpretância, passíveis de serem estabelecidas entre, de um lado, o sistema da língua e os demais sistemas semiológicos e, de outro lado, a língua em relação a si mesma. A partir desse estudo, fundamentam-se duas hipóteses: a primeira considera que a noção de faculdade metalinguística remete, na reflexão benvenistiana, a uma característica geral da linguagem humana; a segunda hipótese sustenta que essa faculdade emerge como uma propriedade das línguas, o que pode ser observado nas relações de interpretância por ela estabelecidas. Nesse sentido, dá-se destaque a três ideias que estão implicadas na teoria da linguagem de Benveniste: faculdade, propriedades e relações. Por fim, avalia-se a importância desse raciocínio no quadro de uma perspectiva antropológica da enunciação. Defende-se que as ideias de Benveniste podem sustentar uma abordagem enunciativo-antropológica desde que se leve em conta os comentários que o falante faz sobre a sua condição de falante ao falar de sua experiência de falante no interior de fenômenos da linguagem.

This article investigates the notion of metalinguistic faculty in the books Problèmes de linguistique générale 1 [Problems in general linguistics]and Problèmes de linguistique générale, 2, by French linguist Émile Benveniste. This notion is presented in the books as the basis for understanding the property of interpretance of languages, which allows the establishment of relationships of interpretance, which may be established between, on the one hand, the language system and other semiological systems and, on the other hand, the language in relation to itself. Two hypotheses emerge from this study: the first considers that, in Benveniste’s reflection, the notion of metalinguistic faculty refers to a general characteristic of human language; the second hypothesis claims that this faculty emerges as a property of languages, which can be observed in the relationships of interpretance it establishes. Thus, we highlight three ideas that are implicated in Benveniste’s theory of language: faculty, properties and relationships. Finally, the importance of this reasoning within the framework of an anthropological perspective on enunciation is assessed. We argue that Benveniste’s ideas can support an enunciative-anthropological approach seeing that the comments that speakers make about their status of speakers when talking about their experience as speakers within language phenomena are taken into account.
