A trajetória de formação de um livreiro-impressor no Sul da América : Guilherme Echenique e a Livraria Universal em Pelotas

Abstract

Neste artigo procurei compreender a fundação de uma livraria e tipografia em particular como parte de um projeto cultural e comercial mais amplo, que envolvia redes matrimoniais emercantis entrefamílias de várias regiões do Sul da América. Por meio da reconstituição de alguns aspectos da trajetória do livreiro-impressor Guilherme Echenique e de suas redes familiares, analiso o significado da emergência dos negócios do livro em uma linhagem há muito familiarizada com outras transações comerciais e produtivas. Situado no Sul do Rio Grande do Sul, no final do século XIX, o empreendimento investe na mercadoria livro justamente em um contexto de profundas transformações nos modos de vida tradicionais ligados ao campo e de alterações mais gerais na sociedade. O vínculo entre o livreiro-impressor e a elite política local, composta sobretudo por filhos de estancieiros, herdeiros das charqueadas decadentes, ocorre pelo compartilhamento de interesses culturais pelas temáticas gauchescas, estabelecendo, assim, uma forma de pensar o modo de vida do sul do estado.

In this article, I have sought to understand the foundation of a bookshop and a typography press as part of a broader cultural and commercial project, which involved marital and mercantile networks amongst families from several regions of southern America.By reconstructing some aspects of the trajectory of a bookseller-printer named Guilherme Echenique and of his family networks, I analyze the meaning of the emergence of the book industry to a lineage that has long been familiar with other productive and commercial transactions. Located in the south part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the late 19th century, the enterprise invested in book merchandising precisely in a context of intense changes in traditional lifestyles associated with the countrysideand of broader changes in society. The relationship between the bookseller-printer and the local political elite, composed mainly of ranchers’ sons, heirs of the decadent charqueadas, occurred through the sharing of cultural interests concerning gaucho matters that established a common way of thinking about the lifestyle in the south of the state.
