Uma linguística das funções do homem na língua e na linguagem

Abstract

A hipótese desse artigo é que a linguística de Émile Benveniste pode ser lida como uma linguística das funções. Tais funções são entendidas como universais antropológicos situados no plano da linguagem no interior dos quais o homem ocupa um lugar sempre que enuncia. Para apresentar e fundamentar essa hipótese, inicialmente discutimos brevemente a presença da noção de função no campo dos estudos linguísticos. Em seguida, fazemos um levantamento do uso do termo e da noção nos dois volumes dos Problemas de linguística geral, mostrando os diferentes sentidos que função adquire em sua obra. Finalmente, apresentamos uma noção específica de função como um universal de caráter antropológico a partir da leitura do artigo “As relações de tempo no verbo francês”.

The hypothesis of this article is that Émile Benveniste’s linguistics can be read as a linguistics of functions. Those functions are understood as anthropological universals situated in the language level, within which man always occupies a place whenever he speaks. To present and support this hypothesis, we initially discuss briefly the presence of the notion of function in linguistics. Next, we present a survey of the use of the term and the concept in the two volumes of Problems in general linguistics, demonstrating the various meanings that the term function holds in his work. Finally, we introduce a specific notion of function as an anthropological universal based on a reading of the article “The Relations of Time in the French Verb.”
