Carlos Barbosa Gonçalves e as Artes

Abstract

Carlos Barbosa Gonçalves (1851–1933) era Presidente do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul no momento da criação do que é hoje o Instituto de Artes da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (IA-UFRGS), em 1908, sendo seu fundador. A presente pesquisa discute aspectos sobre a relação dele com o campo das artes e da cultura através de alguns tópicos de sua trajetória e, notadamente, da sua participação na criação do IA-UFRGS. A atuação desse agente político e cultural é apresentada de modo pontual através de algumas obras construídas no seu governo, e aborda principalmente o reconhecimento e a preservação da sua memória relacionada à sua atuação no IA-UFRGS. Articulando dados biográficos e documentação histórica, este trabalho tem como objetivo lançar luz sobre a atuação desse personagem ainda pouco conhecido, partindo de seu envolvimento público e pessoal com as artes.

Carlos Barbosa Gonçalves (1851–1933) was President of the State of Rio Grande do Sul at the time of the creation of the Institute of Arts of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (IA-UFRGS), in 1908, as its founder. This research discusses aspects of the relationship between the field of art and culture through some themes from his trajectory and, notably, his participation in the creation of IA-UFRGS. The work of this political and cultural agent is presented through some works built by his government, and mainly the recognition and preservation of his memory about his work at IA- UFRGS. Articulating biographical data and historical documentation, this work aims to shed light on the performance of this still little-known character, based on his public and personal involvement with the arts.
