Aríon e o Tíaso Marinho : entrecruzamentos no mosaico da Villa Romana del Casale

Abstract

Buscamos com o presente trabalho compreender o mosaico da sala absidal (conhecida como sala de Aríon) da Villa Romana del Casale e interpretá-lo a partir do método iconológico estruturado por Erwin Panofsky. Para este fim, entrecruzamos arte e literatura, estabelecendo um corpus textual e um corpus de obras de arte que sustentaram nosso entendimento e análise da obra objeto desta pesquisa. Panofsky serviu-nos de fundamentação teórica e sua abordagem estruturou nossa metodologia de análise do mosaico. Utilizamo-nos da literatura greco-romana como ferramenta, com foco nos escritos de Hesíodo, Heródoto, Homero, Cícero, Ésquilo, entre outros, em diálogo com a temporalidade do sítio em questão (século IV d.C., do tardo Império romano) para discorrer sobre qual a possível razão pela qual Aríon e o tíaso marinho se entrecruzam neste mosaico. Resultando numa visão mais abrangente do significado simbólico das imagens do período, em especial do mosaico estudado, cuja análise uniu elementos visuais às narrativas culturais e ao contexto sócio-histórico e cultural do período de construção do mosaico objeto de nossa discussão.

n this study, we seek to understand the mosaic of the apsidal room (known as the Arion room) of the Villa Romana del Casale and interpret it using the iconological method structured by Erwin Panofsky. To this end, we interweave art and literature, establishing a textual corpus and a corpus of works of art that supported our understanding and analysis of the work that is the object of this research. Panofsky served as our theoretical foundation and his approach structured our methodology for analyzing the mosaic. We used Greco-Roman literature as a tool, focusing on the writings of Hesiod, Herodotus, Homer, Cicero, Aeschylus, among others, in dialogue with the temporality of the site in question (4th century AD, of the late Roman Empire) to discuss the possible reason why Arion and the marine thiasus intersect in this mosaic. Resulting in a more comprehensive view of the simbolic meaning of the images of the period, especially the mosaic studied, whose analysis combined visual elements with cultural narratives and the socio-historical and cultural context of the period in which the mosaic that is the object of our discussion was constructed.
