A patronagem do sultão Mehmed II : a arte e seu papel na transformação do império otomano no século XV

Abstract

A pesquisa tem como objetivo a exploração da relação de Mehmed II Fatih Osmanoglü com a patronagem artística e a influência de seus interesses pessoais na transformação da corte otomana no período de seu reinado. Inicia-se com uma leitura historiográfica da juventude do sultão até o período pouco após a conquista de Constantinopla, em 1453, baseando-se, primariamente, nas obras de John Freely e Caroline Finkel. A partir daí, é analisada a patronagem artística de Mehmed II e seu uso na transformação da Constantinopla ortodoxa na Istambul muçulmana. Explicar a relação da patronagem com os interesses pessoais de Mehmed II, suas motivações, seus métodos e resultados, com a expectativa de estabelecer uma imagem clara do papel da personalidade de Mehmed neste período transformativo é o foco principal deste trabalho. Além da biografia e dos testemunhos sobre Mehmed, será explorada a relação de artistas italianos com a corte Otomana no período em questão (1453-1481), com ênfase na recepção de Gentile Bellini no Palácio Topkapi e suas trocas e relação com o sultão, resultantes no famoso retrato de 1480.

The goal of this research is the exploration of sultan Mehmed II Fatih Osmanoglü's relation with artistic patronage and his personal interests' influence in the transformation of the Ottoman court during his reign. It begins with a historiographical reading of the sultan's youth until the period soon after the conquest of Constantinople, based primarily in the works of John Freely and Caroline Finkel. From there, Mehmed II's artistic patronage and its use in the transformation of Orthodox Constantinople into Muslim Istanbul becomes the focus of the analysis. Explaining the relation of such patronage with the personal interests of Mehmed II, his motivations, methods and results, with the expectation of establishing a clear image of the role of Mehmed's personality in this transformative period is the focus of this research. In addition to Mehmed's biography and testimonies from contemporaries will be na analysis of the relation of certain italian artists with the Ottoman court in the period in question (1453-1481), with an emphasis on the stay of Gentile Bellini in the Topkapi Palace, along with his exchanges and relation with the sultan, which resulted in the famous portrait dating from 1480.
