"Abençoado pelo algoritmo" : concepções teístas sobre inteligência artificial em discursos digitais

Abstract

"Meu primeiro voo de longa distância que não lotou e uma fileira de assentos vazia só para mim! Fui abençoado pelo algoritmo!". A frase "abençoado pelo algoritmo" expressa a sensação de sorte com o teor de seu feed em várias plataformas de mídia social, ou com a viralização daquele conteúdo que você criou, ou com aquela oportunidade incrível de renda extra (ou gig economy, no inglês) que surgiu. No entanto, também podemos situá-la no discurso público mais amplo, empregando concepções teístas de IA (inteligência artificial). Com base em nosso trabalho de campo antropológico sobre os "entrecruzamentos entre IA e religião" (Singler, 2017a), este artigo explorará como as postagens "abençoados pelo algoritmo" são indicativas do impacto de narrativas teístas sobre IA: percepções implicitamente religiosas sobre a IA. Esse raciocínio também representa um passo atrás para uma posição que se opõe à tese de secularização e a outras grandes narrativas de desencantamento que reivindicam que a laicidade ocorre como resultado do progresso tecnológico e intelectual. Este artigo também explorará novos movimentos religiosos em que concepções teístas de IA entrecruzam aspirações tecnológicas com religiosas.

"My first long haul fight that didn’t fill up and an empty row for me. I have been blessed by the algorithm". The phrase "blessed by the algorithm" expresses the feeling of having been fortunate in what appears on your feed on various social media platforms, or in the success or virality of your content as a creator, or in what gig economy jobs you are offered. However, we can also place it within wider public discourse employing theistic conceptions of AI. Building on anthropological fieldwork into the "entanglements of AI and Religion" (Singler, 2017a), this article will explore how "blessed by the algorithm" tweets are indicative of the impact of theistic AI narratives: modes of thinking about AI in an implicitly religious way. This thinking also represents continuities that push back against the secularisation thesis and other grand narratives of disenchantment that claim secularity occurs because of technological and intellectual progress. This article will also explore new religious movements, where theistic conceptions of AI entangle technological aspirations with religious ones.
