Strategies for physical exercise and health education are important to minimize negative changes due to aging, which may impair functional fitness, physical activity level, as well as their engagement in physical exercise programs. To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in health education and exercise in functional fitness, level of physical activity of older people and their perceptions about participation in the InformAÇÃO Project. The study included 60 elderly women, selected non-randomly, divided into three groups: Physical Intervention (F1, n = 20); Physical Intervention and Health Education (F2; n = 20); only Health Education (A1; n = 20). For the physical intervention, a multimodal training was performed twice a week with a duration of 50 minutes. The lectures of the health education intervention were held once a week lasting 1 hour. The physical fitness (agility and dynamic balance – TUG, coordination – COO, upper and lower limb strength – ULS and LLS, flexibility – FLEX, and walking test – 6MW), level of physical activity (International Questionnaire of Physical Activity – IPAQ) and perception of the project through the Focal Group were assessed before and after 12 weeks of interventions. We used Generalized Estimating Equations with Bonferroni post hoc (α = 0.05); absolute delta for IPAQ analysis; Focus Group through the Thematic Content Analysis Technique. All groups improved performance on TUG, ULS, LLS and 6MW without difference between groups. The COO improved in F2 and A1, while F1 presented a maintenance. FLEX has been maintained over time. The general physical activity time presented an increase tendency in groups F1 and F2 and a decrease in group A1. Analyzing focus group, all groups concluded that the project can be effective in changing behavior at different levels. The InformAÇÃO Project was effective for the improvement of the functional fitness and for the increase of the level of physical activity, as well as, it showed positive perceptions regarding the change of behavior. Greater benefits seem to be verified with the inclusion of systematic physical exercise practice ...
