Carnaval : o Brasil traduzido em Gebrauchsanweisung für brasilien, de Peter Burghardt

Abstract

Este trabalho consiste em apresentar a obra Gebrauchsanweisung für Brasilien (2013) [Manual de uso para o Brasil], escrita pelo jornalista Peter Burghardt, e analisar a representação do Brasil nas passagens escolhidas. Para isso, foram selecionados trechos de Carnaval, nono capítulo do livro, no qual o autor relata sua experiência no carnaval do Rio de Janeiro ao assistir ao ensaio e ao desfile da Unidos da Tijuca em 2013, cujo tema era a Alemanha. As análises de aspectos como a representação da Alemanha por meio do carnaval brasileiro, o olhar para o Outro e estereótipos estão amparadas nos conceitos-chave da literatura de viagem, da tradução cultural (BHABHA, 1998; BERMAN, 2017) e da domesticação e estrangeirização (VENUTI, 2002). O objetivo deste trabalho é estimular a reflexão sobre o modo como uma cultura é traduzida para outra e sobre a influência dessa tradução nas possíveis futuras relações entre culturas em questão. Além disso, espero que a interpretação que o Outro faz sobre o Brasil contribua para que possamos pensar sobre e por nós mesmos, não mais pela perspectiva eurocêntrica.

This paper consists of presenting the book Gebrauchsanweisung für Brasilien (2013), written by the journalist Peter Burghardt, and analyzes the representation of Brazil in the chosen excerpts. For this, I selected excerpts from Carnaval, the ninth chapter of the book, in which the author reports his experience in Rio de Janeiro's carnival by attending the Unidos da Tijuca’s rehearsal and parade in 2013, whose theme was Germany. The analyses of aspects such as the representation of Germany through the Brazilian Carnival, the gaze of the Other and stereotypes are supported by the concepts of travel literature, cultural translation (BHABHA, 1998; BERMAN, 2017) and domestication and foreignization (VENUTI, 2002). This undergrad thesis aims to stimulate the reflection on how one culture is translated into another and the influence of this translation on the possible future relations between these cultures. Furthermore, I hope that the Other's interpretation of Brazil will help us to think about and for ourselves, no longer from the Eurocentric perspective.
