Hello, my name is Miles Morales: representações do herói negro protagonista em Homem-Aranha no Aranhaverso (2018)

Abstract

O presente trabalho tem como questão central investigar as possíveis contribuições que o filme em animação Homem-Aranha no Aranhaverso, de 2018, pode oferecer para o imaginário acerca do protagonismo heroico negro no cinema. Para tanto, a pesquisa consiste em analisar o protagonista do filme, Miles Morales, a fim de compreender o contexto de surgimento deste herói protagonista preto. Para responder o objetivo central então, foram elencados objetivos específicos: 1) Identificar e questionar estereótipos do herói e do jovem preto; 2) Contextualizar o cenário em que o personagem principal, Miles Morales, assume o legado de herói; 3) Identificar elementos da identidade racial do personagem protagonista; e 4) Discutir se a herança negra do personagem tem alguma influência sobre a nova versão do herói clássico Homem-Aranha. Para fundamentação teórica, portanto, foram abordados conceitos referentes à concepção de raça e seus estereótipos, considerando nesse ponto também os sistemas de opressão e regulamentação de uma hierarquia social como o racismo e a colonização de imagens. Em tempo, questões de identidade negra e representações sociais, assim como cinema enquanto espaço de mobilizações e a incidência de personagens negros heroicos também foram interpretados neste estudo. Ao articular o que é ser negro, ou melhor torna-se negro enquanto experiência de vida e processo de decolonização de imagens, foram mobilizadas temáticas acerca da identidade cultural (HALL, 2016 e 2021); raça e representações (HOOKS, 2019) e o mito do nascimento de heróis (RANK, 2015), buscando assim identificar contribuições que a narrativa de um herói negro pode incitar para o protagonismo negro. A partir da mobilização de um estado da arte, esta pesquisa configura-se como pesquisa exploratória e foi interpretada através de instrumentos que compreendem a metodologia de Análise Fílmica (PENAFRIA, 2009), com foco na narrativa do personagem. Por meio da análise, foi possível averiguar como os elementos da identidade negra do protagonista são articulados na narrativa e de que modo incidem em sua personalidade e construção também enquanto herói. Miles é um retrato consistente do que a baixa autoestima de jovens negros — também no cotidiano escolar — pode provocar e produz sentidos acerca dos inúmeros talentos que se perdem por conta do racismo estrutural. Todavia, o personagem também possibilita que novos sentidos sejam construídos a partir de seu contexto de surgimento, implicando que a cultura pop também é um ensejo para negros e, com devida representatividade, tem potencial para subverter o poder da imagem colonizadora sobre jovens pretos.

The present work has as its central issue to investigate potential contributions that the animated film Spider-Man in the Spider-Verse, from 2018, can offer to the imagination of black heroic protagonism in cinema. For that, the research consists of analyzing the protagonist of the film, Miles Morales, in order to understand the context of the emergence of this black protagonist hero. To answer the central objective then, specific objectives were listed: 1) Identify and question stereotypes of the hero and the young black man; 2) Contextualize the scenario in which the main character, Miles Morales, assumes the hero's legacy; 3) Identify elements of the lead character's racial identity; and 4) Discuss whether the character's black heritage has any bearing on the new version of the classic hero Spider-Man. For theoretical foundation, therefore, concepts referring to the conception of race and its stereotypes were addressed, considering at this point also the systems of oppression and regulation of a social hierarchy such as racism and the colonization of images. In time, issues of black identity and social representations, as well as cinema as a space for mobilizations and the incidence of heroic black characters were also interpreted in this study. By articulating what it means to be black, or better, to become black as a life experience and a process of decolonization of images, themes about cultural identity (HALL, 2016 and 2021), race and representations (HOOKS, 2019), and the myth of the birth of the heroes (RANK, 2015) were mobilized, thus seeking to identify contributions that the narrative of a black hero can incite to black protagonism. From the mobilization of a state of the art, this research is configured as exploratory research and was interpreted through instruments that comprise the methodology of Film Analysis (PENAFRIA, 2009), with a focus on the lead character's narrative. Through the analysis, it was possible to investigate how the elements of the lead character's black identity are articulated in the narrative and how it affects his personality and his construction as a hero. Miles is a consistent portrait of what the low self-esteem of young black people — also in everyday school life — can provoke and produces meanings about the countless talents that are lost because of structural racism. However, the character also allows new meanings to be constructed from the context of his emergence, implying that pop culture is also an opportunity for blacks and, by due representation, has the potential to subvert the power of the colonizing image over young black people.
