A COVID-19, doença causada pelo vírus SARS-CoV2 e responsável por uma das maiores pandemias já presenciadas pela humanidade, tem como uma de suas características a evolução para pneumonia viral com importante hipoxemia em casos graves, com necessidade de hospitalização de até 20% dos infectados na era pré-vacinal. A COVID-19, doença causada pelo vírus SARS-CoV2 e responsável por uma das maiores pandemias já presenciadas pela humanidade, tem como uma de suas características a evolução para pneumonia viral com importante hipoxemia em casos graves, com necessidade de hospitalização de até 20% dos infectados na era pré-vacinal. A idade por si só foi um fator diretamente relacionado a piores desfechos, haja vista a menor capacidade de resposta às adversidades oferecidas pelo meio e redução de reserva funcional inerente ao processo de envelhecimento humano. Entretanto, em decorrência dos múltiplos fenótipos que idosos da mesma idade podem apresentar, a utilização apenas da idade como critério prognóstico e de tomadas de decisões pode ser insuficiente e antiética em cenários de escassez de recursos como os vistos na primeira fase da pandemia. A categorização desses fenótipos através de uma escala clínica de fragilidade foi uma das soluções para melhor avaliação prognóstica e auxílio na tomada de decisões na faixa etária geriátrica.
