Da homofobia ao amor romântico: uma análise sobre a construção do relacionamento gay entre Adam e Eric em Sex Education

Abstract

Esta pesquisa investiga: como Sex Education constrói a representação midiática dos relacionamentos gays juvenis? O objetivo geral do estudo é analisar como a representação do relacionamento gay entre Adam e Eric é construída a partir das suas performatividades na série. Os objetivos específicos são: identificar as cenas em que aparecem as sexualidades dos personagens através do relacionamento; identificar as dimensões da performatividade através da análise do relacionamento dos personagens; e discutir como essas representações são construídas para entender se exercem padronizações e estereótipos. Para tanto, a pesquisa tem um cunho qualitativo utilizando as técnicas de pesquisa documental e análise de imagem em movimento. No aporte teórico, partimos dos Estudos Culturais para abordarmos a representação e identidade com base em Stuart Hall (2016). Para investigar os conceitos de performatividade de gênero e sexualidade, utilizamos Judith Butler (2013) e Guacira Louro (2018). Para entender como o relacionamento foi construído, acionamos o conceito de amor romântico com base em Maria Thereza Toledo (2013) e Ana Sofia Antunes das Neves (2007). Analisamos as três primeiras temporadas da série, a partir de três categorias diferentes: a descoberta e vivência da sexualidade através do relacionamento gay; a trajetória da agressão ao amor romântico no relacionamento gay e as práticas sexuais no relacionamento gay. Examinamos 19 cenas que se dividiram entre as categorias e os seus diálogos foram transcritos para análise. O resultado da pesquisa mostrou a heteronormatividade incidindo na construção da performatividade de cada membro do casal, sendo reforçada a ideia de amor romântico a partir dos papéis de gênero que cada personagem ocupa dentro do relacionamento. Entretanto, percebemos quebras de representações hegemônicas no que se refere às práticas sexuais do casal, ao mesmo tempo em que destacamos o potencial de estereotipagem e invisibilidade com relação às sexualidades particulares de cada personagem.

This research investigates: how Sex Education constructs the media representation of gay youth relationships? The general objective of the study is to analyze how the representation of the gay relationship between Adam and Eric is built from their performativities in the series. The specific objectives are: to identify the scenes in which the characters' sexualities appear through the relationship; to identify the dimensions of performativity through the analysis of the characters’ relationship; and discuss how these representations are constructed to understand if they exercise standardizations and stereotypes. Therefore, the research has a qualitative nature using the techniques of documentary research and analysis of moving images. In terms of theoretical contribution, we started with Cultural Studies to approach representation and identity based on Stuart Hall (2016). To investigate the concepts of gender performativity and sexuality, we used Judith Butler (2013) and Guacira Louro (2018). To understand how the relationship was built, we activated the concept of romantic love based on Maria Thereza Toledo (2013) and Ana Sofia Antunes da Neves (2007). We analyzed the first three seasons of the series, from three different categories: the discovery and experience of sexuality through gay relationships; the trajectory of aggression to romantic love in gay relationships and sexual practices in gay relationships. We examined 19 scenes that were divided into categories and their dialogues were transcribed for analysis. The result of the research showed the heteronormativity influencing the construction of the performativity of each member of the couple, reinforcing the idea of romantic love from the gender roles that each character occupies within the relationship. However, we noticed breaks in hegemonic representations with regard to the couple's sexual practices, while highlighting the potential for stereotyping and invisibility in relation to the particular sexualities of each character.
