Figurações do grotesco em Patricia Piccinini : arelação pendular entre atração e repulsa

Abstract

Esta pesquisa toma como escopo a investigação estética do grotesco, enfatizando suas potencialidades artísticas e usando-as como eixo condutor para discorrer sobre a poética da artista australiana Patricia Piccinini (1965). Para tal, parte-se das investigações de Wolfgang Kayser (1957) sobre o grotesco e suas contribuições para as artes visuais através do teor fantástico, quimérico e assustador alicerçados ao estilo, responsável por evocar a sensação de estranheza. As especificidades visuais assumidas pelo grotesco incutem nesta categoria estética um caráter de ambiguidade, marcado pela atração e pela repulsa. Tal caráter manifesta-se também na obra de Patricia Piccinini, que, ao dialogar com o grotesco através da gênese visual das criaturas que concebe, engendra sua poética na concepção de seres monstruosos que são resultados possíveis da mistura do DNA humano com o animal e convida o espectador a pensar sobre o lado afetivo de tais seres ao expô-los em situações afáveis da vida mundana. A presente pesquisa, portanto, apresenta o percurso histórico do grotesco, articulando-o à trajetória artística desta proponente de domínios paralelos. As investigações aqui expostas apoiam-se em estudos científicos de Adolfo Sanchez Vazquez (1999), Ieda Tucherman (1999) e José Gil (1994), bem como em um levantamento de obras, catálogos de exposições e materiais teóricos referentes à obra de Patricia Piccinini. Por articular produções artísticas às concepções do grotesco, a pesquisa visa colaborar, também, para a compreensão desta categoria estética em outras manifestações da arte contemporânea.

This research takes as its scope the aesthetic investigation of the grotesque, emphasizing its artistic potential and using them as a guiding axis to discuss the poetics of the Australian artist Patricia Piccinini (1965). To this end, one starts from Wolfgang Kayser's (1957) investigations on the grotesque and its contributions to the visual arts through the fantastic, chimerical and frightening content grounded in style, responsible for evoking the feeling of strangeness. The visual specificities assumed by the grotesque instill in this aesthetic category a character of ambiguity, marked by the attraction and the repulsion. Such character is also manifested in the work of Patricia Piccinini, who when dialoguing with the grotesque through the visual genesis of the creatures she conceives, engenders her poetics in the conception of monstrous beings that are possible results of the mixture of human and animal DNA and invites the viewer to think about the affective side of such beings by exposing them in affable situations of mundane life. The present research, therefore, presents the historical path of the grotesque, articulating it to the artistic trajectory of this proponent of parallel domains. The investigations presented here are based on scientific studies by Adolfo Sanchez Vazquez (1999), Ieda Tucherman (1999) and José Gil (1994), as well as on a survey of works, exhibition catalogs and theoretical materials related to the work of Patricia Piccinini. By linking artistic productions to the conceptions of the grotesque, the research also aims to contribute to the understanding of this aesthetic category in other manifestations of contemporary art.
