This dissertation has as its goal studying the theme of migration in the novel A imensidão íntima dos carneiros, by Marcelo Maluf, published in 2015. The narrative presents the connections between the trajectory of Assaad Maluf, a Lebanese man who emigrated to Brazil in the early XX century, and that of Marcelo Maluf, his Brazilian grandson, trying to get to know his roots, by retracing the paths followed by his grandfather. Focusing the analysis on these two characters, we try to understand how both elaborate memory – individual and collectively – through word. Assaad must seek exile in Brazil, still as a child, as his siblings are murdered by soldiers of the Ottoman Turkish Empire, event which made him part not only from his homeland, but also his origins, language and self-identification with Lebanon. This trauma made it so that the building of his identity went through the denial of his homeland, the exclusion of all reference to his past and through an attempt of belonging in Brazilian lands, which failed for several years. This belonging first comes to be when he, through writing a memory journal, elaborated his past, and took in his family trauma. The use of writing as a tool of elaboration is also pursued by Marcelo, who as an adult discovers his grandfather’s story, and from it, questions his own identity, and pursues, in the writings of his grandfather’s trails, his proximity to him, to then understand his Lebanese identity and family memory. In that sense, memory and migration are interlaced concepts in the novel, and the intention is, hence, to identify the complexity present in the identity building of subjects in displacement. With this goal in mind, a theory basis of authors who study exile was used, such as Edward Said, Pierre Ouellet, and John Durham Peters, as well as scholars who focus their studies on the analysis of memory, as Aleida Assman, Jeanne Marie Gagnebin, and Marcio Seligmann-Silva.
