Bem viver em regras : urbanidade e civilidade em manuais de saúde

Abstract

A investigação analisa dois manuais de autoria do médico gaúcho Dr. Mário Totta.Um deles denomina-se O médico em casa, o outro intitula-se Medicina em Pílulas: Breviárioda Saúde; ambos publicados pela Livraria do Globo de Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul,Brasil, em 1939. Caracterizam-se por apresentarem um conjunto variado de temas queabrangem desde instruções e procedimentos para a cura de pequenas moléstias, primeirossocorros, noções elementares de puericultura, enfim, cuidados básicos com a higiene docorpo, alimentar, das habitações, passando também pela codificação minuciosa de condutasde urbanidade, produzindo, conforme o estudo demonstra, uma intensa associação entreurbanidade ou civilidade com higiene e saúde. A forma como os conselhos são apresentadosindicam que há uma intersecção de argumentos científicos e argumentos de ordem moral.O exame dos manuais volta-se para a complexidade das relações entre o próprio texto dosmanuais, seu suporte, sua materialidade, ou seja, o objeto que comunica o texto e o atoque o apreende, sua apropriação por múltiplas leituras de distintos sujeitos. O propósitomaior é situar os manuais em meio a um conjunto de práticas discursivas da medicina voltadasà educação sanitária da população, detendo-se particularmente em descrever o que disserame propuseram os médicos sobre o tema da urbanidade, através desses textos, e seu caráter educativo.

The investigation analyse two manuals of the physician Dr. Mário Totta, ThePhysician at Home and Medicine in Pills:Short Histories Health. Both were published in 1939,by Livraria do Globo, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. They present instructions andprocedures for the cure of small maladies, first helps elementary notions of puericulture,and basic attentions with the body hygiene, diet, habitation, and also by the particularcodification of conduct making severe association of urbanity or civility with hygiene andhealth. The form of their counsel indicates an intersection of scientific and moral arguments.The examination of the manuals shows the complexity of the relations between the verytext of manuals, their support, their materiality, such as, the object of text and the numerousmeanings of its several subjects. The major purpose of this work is to put the manuals inthe center of a medical practice, which aimed the sanitary education of the people. It alsofocuses on the discourse of the physicians about urbanity through their texts and theireducative character.
