Hospital Dental Service is defined as a practice that aims at the care of oral problems that requires procedures of low, medium or high complexity, performed in a hospital environment, whose purpose is to improve the general health and quality of life of hospitalized patients. The presence of a dentist in the multiprofessional hospital team is essential because scientific evidence supports the harmfulness caused by the presence of oral diseases in the degradation of health of the hospitalized individual, leading to an increase in hospitalization time and rates of morbidity and mortality . At the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA), the hospital dental service is performed by the Stomatology and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery teams. The objective of this study was to perform a survey of the hospital consultation requests to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery team of HCPA from January 2015 to August 2017, in order to highlight the main demands on this specialty and to measure the team's capacity in resolving these requests. Of the 154 consultancy requests analyzed, a greater number of requests were made by the cardiology teams, and the most frequent condition of health of the analyzed patients was cardiovascular diseases. The most frequent reason for hospitalization was due to bacterial infectious processes and "septic teeth / toothache" was the main reason for consultation. After the patients evaluation by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery team - which was performed less than 24 hours after the request -, was more frequently noticed the need for dental extraction in these patients. Altogether, 43 surgical interventions were performed, and the time between evaluation and intervention, on average, was 8 days. Based on the analysis of the information obtained, it was concluded that, due to the patients poor oral health conditions, there is a need for a dental professional in the multidisciplinary hospital team and a need of potentialization of oral health promotion and prevention activities at the primary care level. ...
