The objective of this work is to present the process of functionalist translation of humor in the comic book Tranche-Trognes (2012), of French authors Christian Jolibois and Joëlle Passeron. First we present the theoretic thinking of McCloud (1994) on the language of comic books and the studies of Assis (2016) on the specificities of this kind of translation. To ground the discussion on the translation of humor, we use research that tackles humor (DOLITSKY, 1983) and the translation of humor (LAURIAN, 1992; 2017). We also return to the analysis of Eco (2007) on intertextuality. Then, we present the textual analysis with focus on translation, considering mainly the target audience and textual function proposed by Nord (2008) and Vermeer’s Scope Theory. We then comment on the project that was established for this translation, which was elaborated based on these functionalist approaches. Finally, we expose in detail the process of producing humor in the source text and justify the solutions employed in the translation.en
