During manganese ore production, in crushing steps half of the amount of material mined end up as fines in tailing dams. Despite such materials has chemical characteristics close to what is demanded by manganese ferroalloy producers their particle sizes are much finer than the specification. As an attempt to recycle fines agglomeration process like briquetting is used. This work aims to evaluate the performance of briquettes made with fines of three different manganese bearing materials during pre-reduction. In the work, crushed Comilog ore and Assmang ore are used as references to compare with Urucum tailing dam material, located in Corumbá – Brazil. Three different batches of each manganese bearing material was pressed in the form of briquettes. The first two batches used molasses as binder, the second had the addition of coke as reducing material. The third batch used bentonite as binder. The three batches were submitted to a pre-reduction test. The green briquettes and pre-reduced briquettes were tested regarding porosity, compressive strength, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Pre-reduced briquettes were tested to assess its degradation due to heating. It was showed that briquettes were reduced at lower temperatures mainly due to higher porosity after the molasses evaporation left voids within the briquette’s structure. Regarding degradation due to heating, they performed better than lumps which is accredited to sintering that occurred between the briquette’s particles. Briquettes made of manganese bearing material and coke do not react in lower temperatures than the other briquettes, however, they can be a valuable alternative to charge fines of carbon within the furnace. The predominant phase detected in the pre-reduced material was mainly a solid solution manganese-iron oxide. Micrographs revealed sintering in some samples which may explain the enhanced compressive strength of briquettes made with the finer top-sizes. The results achieved lead to the feasibility of the use of such materials in the submerged electric arc furnace showing better performance when compared with the conventional raw materials, especially when molasses was used as binder. The use of agglomerates lowers energy and coke consumption. ...
