Rio Grande do Sul has stood out in the Brazilian solar energy market, although solar radiation levels are lower than in the rest of the national territory, the state is currently the second largest in installed power of urban photovoltaic systems in the country. In this sense, it is important to know the generation capacity of the region. This study aims to survey the existing methodologies to estimate the potential of photovoltaic generation in distributed electricity generation systems and to apply a methodology in regions of the city of Porto Alegre. Initially, 30 neighborhoods were chosen by income criteria and surveyed the roof areas of regions by visual inspection of satellite images of the Google Earth virtual tool. Subsequently, the potential for electricity generation by photovoltaic conversion was estimated. In the estimate it was proposed a scenario foreseeing occupation of 70% of the useful faces of the covers. The results were compared with the estimated residential consumption. With the study it is possible to conclude that the distributed power generation has the potential to partially meet the demand of the analyzed area.en
