The use of mathematical models to simulate hydrosedimentological processes in catchments had increased in the two last decades. These models may differ widely according to their objectives, structure or precision in representing the processes, parameters and input/output data. It is important to know the different modeling approaches as to develop, choose and use them correctly. The objective of this study work was to research the applicability of the different modeling approaches, stressing the importance and the best use for each class of model. The models selected for this work were ANSWERS and the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE); in the latter model, the values of peak flow rate and runoff volume were calculated alternately by the methodology of the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) or by IPH-II. The models were applied to 34 events in two small basins (55 and 39,3 ha) located in the Forquetinha river basin in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The results obtained showed the inadequacy of MUSLE to predict sediment yield in the watershed studied and the tendency to overestimating the volume and peak flow rates presented in the SCS model. Excellent results were observed with the IPH-II model applied to the adjusted events. This fact was not observed when the same model was applied to prediction. The ANSWERS model, even used without calibration, provided the best results for sediment yield. The utilization of empirical models is suggested only for situations with lack of field data. As to conceptual models, it is concluded that the working hypotheses should be confirmed inside the basin, and not only at the outlet, to use them with greater reliability. ...
