One of the main causes of death in fires is the smoke. Thus, the prediction of the smoke layer thickness of fires in closed environments is of the utmost importance in the project of buildings as tunnels. In this work the smoke layer thickness is studied through numerical methods using the software FDS for fire cases in tunnels with a scale of 1/6 based on the paper by Gao et al., 2016. The smoke layer thickness is analyzed using the N-percentage rule, integral ratio method, buoyancy frequency method and the default method used in FDS. In this work the objectives were: verify the capacity of FDS to simulate fire in tunnels; define, between the studied methods, the most concordant; quantify the influence of grid refinement in the studied methods and compare the default method used in FDS with the other methods analyzed, in order to recommend or not its use. The capacity of FDS to simulate the studied cases was verified, it was also verifier that the method with more concordance with experimental results was the integral ratio method, however, it was recommended the use of the buoyancy frequency method due to its technical features in favor of security, being this method preferable also in relation to the default method used in FDS. It was found that grid refinement influenced the studied methods in a similar way. ...
