This paper discusses the relationship between linguistic diversity as communicative resource in language use and its possible implications for how we think of and practice translation. A brief review is offered about the different ways linguistic diversity surfaces in language use as a communicative resource. Regional, social and register variation are presented and discussed and a sense of what is understood here by translation is made explicit before attempts are made to address the crucial question regarding how translators may deal with the different aspects of communicatively relevant linguistic diversity in translation. Following the discussion of examples and attitudes regarding issues of regional, social and register variation in translation, the ideological choices regarding linguistic diversity are debated regarding the role of the translator within the production format of the translated text. ...
