As limitações dos produtores de tabaco para encontrar alternativas financeiramente viáveis ao cultivo : um estudo na zona rural do município de São Lourenço do Sul, RS

Abstract

O município de São Lourenço do Sul vem crescendo ano a ano no cultivo de tabaco. A cultura do tabaco possui grande importância sócio econômica no município, por ser o principal produto agrícola da região. Muito se fala dos males causados pelo tabaco, principalmente na forma de cigarro. É fato que o sistema produtivo do tabaco afeta também os produtores, que sofrem com as penalidades durante as etapas de manejo, em especial na época de colheita, quando se submetem às altas temperaturas do verão. A isso soma-se o cansaço físico, a suscetibilidade às doenças diversas, a exposição a agrotóxicos e o endividamento dos agricultores que estabelecem contratos com as empresas fumageiras. Entretanto, segundo os próprios produtores eles precisam continuar neste meio, pois se iniciarem outra cultura esta não terá um mercado certo e um preço já pré-estabelecido como acontece com o tabaco, deixando-os em uma situação de incerteza perante o mercado. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho é compreender os fatores que dificultam a conversão produtiva do tabaco para outras atividades. Utilizou-se o procedimento de estudo de caso, em que foram entrevistados produtores de tabaco, no mês de agosto de 2017, através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas, no município de São Lourenço/RS. Identificou-se que os fumicultores entrevistados produzem tabaco principalmente pelo retorno financeiro. A diversificação ou produção de outros cultivos, segundo os agricultores, se torna inviável porque o sistema produtivo do tabaco possui mercado garantido para a comercialização algo que os demais produtos não possuem. De acordo com os entrevistados nenhum outro produto cultivado na região traz retornos financeiros superiores ao tabaco. Com isso conclui-se que os agricultores não abandonam a produção de fumo e não diversificam porque não há interesse de mudar sua realidade, mesmo com a jornada de trabalho exaustiva.

The municipality of São Lourenço do Sul has been growing year by year in the cultivation of tobacco. Tobacco culture has great economic importance in the municipality, be the main agricultural product of the region. Much is said of the evils caused by tobacco, primarily in the form of cigar. It is a fact that the production system also affects tobacco producers, suffering with the penalties during the stages of management, in particular at the time of harvest, when submitted to high temperatures of summer. In addition to this, the physical exhaustion, the susceptibility to various diseases, exposure to pesticides and the indebtedness of farmers establish contracts with tobacco companies. However, according to the producers themselves they need to continue in this, because if they start another culture this will not have a right and a market price determined as with tobacco, leaving them in a situation of uncertainty to the market. In this sense, the objective of this work is to understand the factors that hinder the conversion of tobacco production to other activities The procedure for case study, in which tobacco producers were interviewed in August of 2017, through semi-structured interviews, in the municipality of San Lorenzo/RS. It was identified that the tobacco growers interviewed produce tobacco mainly by financial return. Diversification or production of other crops, according to farmers, becomes unfeasible because the tobacco production system has a guaranteed market for marketing something that other products do not have. According to the interviewed no other product grown in the region brings superior financial returns to the tobacco. With that concluded that farmers do not abandon the production of smoke and not diversify because there is interest to change your reality, even with the exhaustive work.
