Swift e sua sátira no livro Viagens de Gulliver

Abstract

Quando Viagens de Gulliver foi lançada por Jonathan Swift, em 1726, as reações foram as mais variadas. Alguns falavam em uma história cheia de aventuras feita para encantar crianças e o público juvenil; outros enxergavam na obra uma sátira política muito afiada. A crítica literária, até hoje, se divide entre os que acreditam que o livro foi escrito por um misantropo, e os que encaram Jonathan Swift como alguém preocupado em alertar seus contemporâneos sobre os efeitos negativos de um excesso de otimismo com relação à lógica e aos avanços da ciência. Assim, o objetivo desta monografia é estabelecer relações entre as condições de produção da obra e alguns fatos conhecidos sobre a vida e o estilo do autor para, no final, firmar um entendimento sobre a questão da misantropia e sobre as diferentes leituras que podem ser feitas, seja como sátira política, seja como literatura infanto-juvenil. Nesse percurso, será realizado um estudo do protagonista, Lemuel Gulliver, à luz do tratamento dado às personagens no gênero satírico para, a partir dali, estabelecer conexões entre a criatura, Gulliver, e seu criador, o Reverendo Swift.

When Gulliver’s Travels was first published by Jonathan Swift, in 1726, the reactions were the most varied. Some referred to the story as an adventure book made to fascinate children and young readers. Others saw the work as a sharp sort of political satire. To this day, criticism is divided between those who believe that Gulliver’s Travels was written by a misanthropist, and those who see Jonathan Swift as someone aiming to warn his contemporaries against the negative effects of an excessive optimism about logics and scientific progress. Thus, the aim of this monograph is to establish relations between the conditions of production of the book and some facts connected with the life and style of the author, in order to come to a conclusion about the issue of Misanthropy, and about the different readings that can be made of the work, either as a political satire, or as children's literature. The answers will be reached through a study of the protagonist, Lemuel Gulliver, in relation to the treatment given to characters in satire, so as to establish the connections between Gulliver, the creature, and Reverend Swift, his creator.
