Análise das traduções de elementos culturais em três versões traduzidas do livro The Secret garden, de Frances Hodgson Burnett

Abstract

A tradução é uma tarefa que sempre exige habilidades cognitivas por parte do tradutor, em alguns casos, em um nível mais elevado, como é o caso da tradução de elementos culturais e dialetos em obras literárias. Com a alta demanda por traduções, muito se teoriza e discute sobre tais aspectos, porém, ainda assim, nota-se que não existem padrões específicos frente a tais desafios tradutórios, embora existam diversos métodos empregados por parte dos tradutores. Por esse motivo, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar, no eixo horizontal, três traduções da obra literária The Secret Garden, de Frances Hodgson Burnett, a fim de observar quais foram os caminhos tomados pelos tradutores escolhidos, Marcos Maffei, Sonia Moreira e Ana Maria Machado, em suas traduções. Para tanto, utiliza-se a teoria de Peter Newmark, bem como textos relacionados à questão do dialeto, e tradução de elementos culturais dentro de obras literárias. Buscando ser útil para as reflexões da prática tradutória, o presente trabalho analisa alguns trechos da obra de Burnett carregados por elementos culturais próprios de regiões como a Índia e a Inglaterra, e também o dialeto de Yorkshire, marcado graficamente no original da autora inglesa. Conclui-se que os três tradutores utilizaram recursos diferentes em alguns momentos, mas, em outros, optaram por uma tradução semelhante ou até mesmo igual, tendendo a uma práxis mais neutra.

Translating is a task which demands cognitive abilities of the translator, in some cases, a high level reading and translation competence, which is the case of the translation of cultural aspects and also dialects found in literary works. With the huge demand for translations, many theories and discussions about such aspects have been developed, however, we noticed that there are few descriptive studies related to the translation challenges above mentioned, although there are diverse methods being used empirically by translators. Therefore, this research aims at analyzing, in a horizontal axis, three translations of the literary work The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, in order to observe which were the paths taken by the chosen translators, Marcos Maffei, Sonia Moreira and Ana Maria Machado, in their respective translations. We use Peter Newmark’s theory, and some texts related to the dialect issue, and the translation of cultural aspects in literary works. Aiming to become a useful contribution to the knowledge about translation practice, this research analyzes a selected corpus of excerpts from Burnett’s book, which contain cultural aspects of particular places such as India and England, and also the Yorkshire dialect, graphically marked in the original text of the English writer. We observed that the three translators employed different translation techniques in some moments, but in others they opted for a similar or even identical translation, tending to a more neutralizing praxis.
