In the present work, three different techniques for determining fatigue crack growth thresholds of API 5L X60 steel were studied. In comparison to the traditional methodology for pre-cracking and crack propagation, experiments with different methodologies were conducted in order to determine thresholds exempt from the influence of compressive residual stresses and the crack closure effect. Aiming to minimize the influence of compressive residual stresses, the study verified the methodology composed of compression pre-cracking followed by constant load amplitude, with a loading ratio of 0.5. For the mitigation of crack closure effect the method of conventional pre-cracking followed by propagation in K-decreasing was used, but with a high load ratio of 0.8. Both tests were compared to the traditional K-decreasing with a moderate load ratio of 0.5. By analyzing the curves da/dN x ΔK, coupled with fractographic analysis it was possible to determine the method that determines the most conservative fatigue crack growth threshold, and also indicate the advantageous aspects of each method and their influence on the behavior of fatigue crack growth. ...
