Entre Ghawázee e Awálim : a dança egípcia a partir da obra de Edward Willian Lane

Abstract

Esta pesquisa procura investigar as origens da Dança do Ventre moderna a partir do estudo da obra An Account of the Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians, publicada em 1836 por Edward Willian Lane, famoso orientalista inglês que esteve no Egito na primeira metade do século XIX. Entende-se a presença europeia no Egito neste período como momento-chave na constituição do que hoje é chamado de Dança do Ventre, uma prática com marcas de influência transnacional e carregada de uma série de estereótipos e preconceitos relacionados ao discurso do Orientalismo, tal como defendido pelo autor Edward Said. A partir da análise da obra de Lane, busca-se a gênese deste estilo de dança, ligado diretamente à construção de discursos sobre o Oriente e a mulher oriental, mais especificamente. Constrói-se, a partir daí, um esboço da trajetória de sua difusão para as várias partes do globo onde hoje é praticada, como isto a influenciou e de que forma os discursos orientalistas do século XIX se perpetuam relacionados à dança.

This research investigates the origins of modern belly dance based on the study of the piece, An Account of the Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians, published in 1836 by Edward William Lane, a famous English Orientalist who was in Egypt in the first half of the nineteenth century. The European presence in Egypt during this period is seen as a key moment in the formation of what is now called belly dance, a practice marked by transnational influences and loaded with stereotypes and prejudices related to the discourse of Orientalism, as advocated by author Edward Said. From the analysis of Lane’s book, I seek the origin of this style of dance, directly linked to the construction of discourses about the Orient and the Oriental woman, more specifically. From there, I build an outline of the history of its spread to various parts of the globe where it is practiced today, how this has influenced it and how the nineteenth century Orientalist discourses are perpetuated with regards to the dance.
