A fotossíntese em livros escolares espanhóis de ciências naturais : um percurso de noventa anos (1900-1990)

Abstract

Nesta pesquisa, buscou-se evidenciar o percurso da palavra fotossíntese em livros escolares de ciências naturais editados na Espanha, ao longo dos primeiros 90 anos do século XX (1900-1990). Considerando os contextos de produção de livros escolares, investigou-se uma amostra da coleção de livros da Editorial Bruño, da Ordem Lassalista, que foi composta por dois critérios de seleção: área curricular, livros de ciências naturais; e data de edição inserida no período histórico estudado, resultando em 50 exemplares, utilizados nas escolas espanholas de cada época. Na busca dos vestígios impressos da palavra fotossíntese, outras palavras circunscritas foram identificadas, todas correlatas em seus sentidos e ao seu tempo, diferentes na grafia. Elaborou-se uma Ficha Catalográfica para a coleta de dados, com adaptações a esta pesquisa. Em cada livro, selecionaram-se trechos em que apareciam a palavra fotossíntese ou correlatas, que foram transcritos literalmente. Destacaram-se as palavras identificadas e contou-se o número de aparecimentos de cada uma. Na análise dos dados, as palavras foram transformadas em categorias e subcategorias, por critério semântico (significados), gráfico (signos e símbolos) e quantitativo (número de aparecimentos de cada palavra). Apresentam-se os resultados em cinco gráficos, representando uma síntese da distribuição das categorias e subcategorias, ao seu tempo. Evidenciou-se que o percurso impresso da palavra fotossíntese, nos manuais de ciências naturais amostrados, foi acompanhado por um conjunto de outras palavras, correlatas em seus sentidos, ainda que com diferentes grafias. A categoria fotossíntese, e as demais circunscritas, apresentou o pico máximo de aparecimentos na década de 70. Concluiu-se que o percurso evolutivo da fotossíntese no livro escolar não foi linear nem progressivo. Configurou-se com sinuosidades expressas, ao seu tempo, por variadas entradas e saídas de palavras, diferentes em grafias, não necessariamente em significados. Relacionou-se a distribuição dessas palavras no tempo com as condições histórico-sociais do período investigado: duas Guerras Mundiais, uma Guerra Civil, a ditadura franquista e o início da transição democrática e seus efeitos na história da escolarização espanhola, em especial, a dos manuais escolares.

The aim of this paper was to demonstrate the trajectory of the word photosynthesis in natural sciences textbooks edited in Spain throughout the first ninety years of the 20th century. A sample of the collection of books from Editorial Bruño was investigated. This publishing house, from the Lassalle Order, was French in its origin and subsequently reached Spanish territory. Commencing from the context of production extrinsic to the book, the sample was based on two selection criteria: curricular area (natural sciences); and edition date in the studied historical period (1900-1990). The result was a set of fifty specimens used in both primary and secondary education. In the search of printed traces of the word photosynthesis, other circumscribed words were identified. These words were all correlated in their meaning and different in their spelling. A card catalog for data collection was elaborated. In each book, excerpts which displayed photosynthesis or correlated words were selected. These passages were literally transcribed. In each excerpt the identified words were highlighted and the number of appearances recorded. When the data was analyzed, words were transformed in categories and subcategories according to three criteria: semantic (meanings), graphic (signs and symbols) and quantitative (number of appearances of each word). The results are presented in five graphs: one shows the distribution of the number of books edited per year throughout ninety years; the other four illustrate the categories and subcategories per number of appearances of each word. It was evinced that the printed path of the word photosynthesis in the sampled natural sciences textbooks was accompanied by a set of other words correlated in their meaning even though their spelling was different. In the studied historical period the category photosynthesis and the related words had its peak of appearance in the 1970s. This peak was found to be related to: the available collection of books from the editor; the total number of both gathered specimens and representative sample; the dates of edition; and the historical period investigated in this study. Delimited by two World Wars, a Civil War, the Franco dictatorship and the transition to democracy, the history of the Spanish schooling, especially regarding school textbooks, was subject to the legal determinations of the above mentioned period. As a conclusion, it was found that the trajectory of photosynthesis in the school textbook was neither linear nor progressive. It was instead constituted by sinuosities expressed through different spellings, but not necessarily distinct meanings.
