Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)

The growing demand for roads requires the optimization of the production of asphalt mix with high quality. Understanding the bulk behavior of particles within an asphalt plant’s subsystems is often very difficult due to the difficulties on visualization or measurement. In this case, numerical methods can be used to get a better understanding of the phenomena involved in the bulk behavior on an asphalt plant. Considering that, this work aims to present a methodology for the calibration using discrete elements of a set of granite rocks that are used in the process of asphalt mix production. Therefore, the design of experiment (DOE) was used to better understand the effect of granite’s micro mechanical properties in macro mechanical behavior. Linear regressions were obtained from DOE as assist tool to the process of calibration. The results of the DOE show that the density of the material is the most influential microscopic property in the apparent density of the material, while the coefficients of friction have a greater influence on the angle of repose during the pile formation. The calibrated model was then tested in the simulation of a silo discharge which revealed a good representation within a time interval. Finally, it is observed that the methodology here used was consistent and could be used to calibrate models used in simulations of more complex problems as the simulation of an asphalt plant process. ...
