A comunidade de fala de Porto Alegre no Estudo da variação linguística : identificando subcomunidades

Abstract

Este trabalho apresenta uma breve discussão sobre a comunidade de fala de Porto Alegre, propondo-se a fornecer critérios para a identificação de subcomunidades dentro de sua extensão geográfica. O estudo orienta-se pelos pressupostos da Teoria da Variação (WEINREICH, LABOV & HERZOG, 2006 [1968]; LABOV, 2008 [1972]), dedicando-se especialmente ao conceito de Comunidade de Fala, unidade social básica para os estudos variacionistas. Metodologicamente, inspira-se na Dialetologia Perceptual (PRESTON, 1989), que investiga a percepção de não linguistas sobre variedades linguísticas distribuídas pelo espaço geográfico. Para a coleta de dados, foram elaborados instrumentos de caracterização dos informantes e seus hábitos, de identificação de atitudes em relação ao local em que vivem e à língua que lá se fala e de levantamento de percepção de variedades regionais através de mapas. Os 8 informantes são todos porto-alegrenses que viveram a maior parte de suas vidas na cidade, de escolaridade de nível superior ou superior incompleto e de classe média a média alta. Os resultados revelam uma atitude positiva dos informantes em relação à cidade em que vivem e ao português falado em Porto Alegre e apontam para a zona centro como a mais relevante linguisticamente, seguida de zonas periféricas de alta densidade populacional e perfil de classe social baixa, localizadas ao norte e ao sul do município. Concluímos que a classe social tem peso sobre percepção de subvariedades em Porto Alegre e que o rezoneamento da cidade em quatro zonas simplificadas é produtivo. Ao final, são apontados caminhos para análises futuras, principalmente no que diz respeito à composição de amostras de entrevistas sociolinguísticas com maior representatividade.

This work introduces a brief discussion about the speech community of Porto Alegre, intending to establish a set of criteria for the identification of subcommunities inside its geographic extension. The study is guided by the presuppositions of the Theory of Variation, (WEINREICH, LABOV & HERZOG, 2006 [1968]; LABOV, 2008 [1972]), with especial focus on the concept of Speech Community, a basic social unity for variation studies. The work is methodologically inspired by the Perceptual Dialectology (PRESTON, 1989), which investigates the perception of non linguists towards linguistic varieties as they spread over the geographic space. For data gathering, instruments were created in order to characterize the respondents and their habits, identify their attitudes towards the place where they live and the language spoken there, and to generate data about the perception of regional varieties through maps. The 8 respondents are from Porto Alegre and have lived there for most of their lives, they are middle class or upper middle class undergraduate students or professionals with a university diploma. The results show they have a positive attitude in relation to their city and the type of Portuguese spoken there, also indicating the central region of Porto Alegre as the most linguistically relevant, followed by peripheral areas of high population density and a lower class profile, the ones located at the southern and northern regions of the city. Our conclusions point that Social Class is influential to the perception of subvarieties in Porto Alegre and that the reorganization of the regions of the city in four simplified areas can be productive. Finally, directions to future explorations are pointed out, concerning the sampling of sociolinguistic interviews in a more representative way.
