Teaching of literature in Brazil undergoes changes with the edition of the National Curricular Parameters for Secondary Education, bringing consequences to the reading practice in classroom of various literary genres, including poetic genre. Nevertheless, recent research investigating the habits of readers in Brazil, like INAF or Portraits of Reading in Brazil, continually demonstrate a low rate of preference from those readers for the poetic genre in relation to other genres written in prose. In Brazil, the hegemony of a tradition of teaching based on literary historiography has as its consequence a reading practice based on the recurrence to referential function, i.e., the attempt to read poetry using strategies of reading similar to those used for informative texts, thus precluding a better understanding of the poetic phenomenon. Based on this assumption, this paper aims to investigate the poetry reading practices in high school, seeking to identify the extent to which referentiality serves as a reading guide in understanding poems in class. Considering the objectives proposed by the National Curricular Parameters for teaching literature, we initially investigate what are the theoretical conceptions that historically guided reading practices in classroom and the implications of those formulations to the analysis of the poem. Due to the dearth of research on this topic regarding this educational stage, aiming to build, in part, our own references, we interviewed experts who maintain an active relationship with education, attempting to understand issues related to the difficulty concerning the reading of the genre, theoretical implications for reading in classroom and methodological alternatives, with aim to the education of the reader. Still looking to substantiate the focus proposed in our research, we verified the origins of the antagonistic viewpoints on the relation between the literary work and reality, and the resulting theoretical formulations that underlie either position. Through a questionnaire given to students from the third year of high school, we sought to identify recurring procedures to approach the poem, as well as the articulation between common conceptions of the poetic genre and the analysis of the poem itself. By the end of this work, we formulate suggestions of methodological guidelines for the analysis in classroom, emphasizing the need for the selection of poems that, in their configuration, discuss the matter of referential relationship, increasing the student's ability to understand the poetic phenomenon.en
