This paper analyzes the use of chivalrous and courteous behavior, between the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, in the warrior characters of the book Gesta Danorum – or History of Denmark – by Danish cleric Saxo Grammaticus. The churchman can be considered an agent of the process of Europeanization: he had studied in the Christian center the great writers of Antiquity and the leading scholars of his time, taking to Denmark a behavioral ideal as well as literary and ideological models that influenced his writing. To understand this cultural interaction between the medieval continent and Scandinavia, I analyzed the changes that occurred in both areas, using the theoretical framework of catholic world-system developed by Nils Blomkvist. According to this interpretation, a portion of the Christian continent is configured as the central area, while the Scandinavian kingdoms, amongst other regions, represent the semi-peripheries. In this period, the center had undergone complex changes, which included increasing urbanization, the rise of more centralized monarchies, the expansion of Christianity and the ideology of the Church, and the flowering of a cultural renaissance – in which the chivalric literature and the dissemination of a courtly behavior stand out. From the conjunct action of Europeanization agents – especially clerics ( the ecclesia) and the emerging merchant classes (the mercatura) – these changes soon spread to other regions beyond the center, along with changes in the political and administrative areas. Thus, between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Scandinavian kingdoms, interacting with the center also culturally, began to produce their own literature, which exalted the pagan past with medieval literary models while seeking to match the history of Scandinavia with the great monarchies of the continent. In this process, the book Gesta Danorum can be seen as Saxo trying to build a glorious history of the Danish kingdom, and in it, the cleric represents his warriors with a behavioral ideal that came from the center.en
