Estudo sobre a evasão no curso de Ciência da Computação da UFRGS

Abstract

Neste trabalho, abordaremos a problemática da evasão no curso de Ciência da Computação da UFRGS (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul), no período de 2000 a 2013, com intuito de identificá-la e de apresentar informações e características relacionadas com a mesma. A evasão é um fenômeno presente no ensino superior brasileiro e que causa reflexos negativos em vários sentidos, seja para os estudantes que abandonam o curso superior, reduzindo suas chances de crescimento pessoal e profissional, seja para as instituições, que deixam de cumprir sua função social de educar, por um lado, e de fomentar o mercado de trabalho, por outro. Nesse sentido, apesar do quadro favorável para os profissionais da Computação devido ao crescimento do mercado de trabalho, existe uma escassez da mão de obra no que se refere à área. Dessa forma, fica estabelecida a importância do tema e a sua relação com o cenário e realidade atuais, sendo necessário que a evasão seja vista no contexto educacional como um problema a ser sanado. Assim, abordaremos o fenômeno em diversos sentidos. Inicialmente, faremos uma abordagem histórica a respeito do Instituto de Informática da UFRGS e do cenário da área de computação na época do seu surgimento, destacando a origem dos cursos e algumas das transformações ocorridas até a criação do bacharelado. Além disso, apresentaremos o formato atual do curso com suas principais características, objetivando proporcionar uma maior aproximação do leitor e visando a um melhor entendimento das questões posteriormente abordadas. Em seguida, faremos uma exposição detalhada dos dados de ingresso, diplomação e desligamento referentes ao curso de Ciência da Computação da UFRGS, efetuando uma análise dos mesmos e apresentando informações acerca da evasão e de outros fatores com ela relacionados. De forma semelhante, realizaremos essa mesma abordagem acerca dos dados relativos à área de computação no país, a fim de proporcionar um panorama da situação dos cursos dessa área em nível nacional. Por último, trataremos da pesquisa realizada com alunos do curso de Ciência da Computação da UFRGS com intuito de levantar informações a respeito da evasão sob a perspectiva dos próprios discentes. Assim, buscamos contribuir para uma maior reflexão – na comunidade acadêmica – sobre os papéis dos “atores” envolvidos no curso e na problemática da evasão, sejam alunos, professores, técnicos ou egressos. Por outro lado, também vislumbramos cooperar para uma melhora na relação entre a universidade e a sociedade, bem como para melhoras no atendimento das demandas do mercado de trabalho.

In this paper, we approach the issue of dropouts in the Undergraduate Program in Computer Science at UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul) from the year 2000 to 2013, aiming at identifying the issue and presenting information and characteristics related to it. Dropout is a phenomenon that is present in the Brazilian Higher Education system and it has negative effects in several ways, both for the students, who do not complete a higher education program and that reduces their chances of personal and professional growth, and for the institutions, which do not fulfill their educational social function, or fall short in their purpose of fostering the job market. Therefore, despite the favorable landscape for Computer Science professionals, due to the growth in the job market, there is a shortage of qualified labor force in the field. Thus, the relevance of the theme discussed herein is explained, as well as its relationship with the current scenario and reality, being necessary to place dropouts in the educational context as a problem to be solved. We approach this topic from several perspectives. Initially, we provide a background regarding Instituto de Informática (School of Computer Science) at UFRGS and about the field of Computer Science at the time it started, highlighting the origin of the program and some of the transformations that occurred until the creation of the Bachelor’s Program. In addition, we present the current format of the program with its main characteristics, aiming at establishing a common ground with the reader and trying to reach a better understanding of the issues approached later. Then, we provide detailed information on admission requirements, graduation, and termination related to the Computer Science Program, analyzing such aspects and providing further information on dropout and other factors related to it. We provide a similar perspective regarding the field of computer science in the country in order to give an overview of the status of programs of this area at the national level. Finally, we present a survey done with students from the Undergraduate Program in Computer Science at UFRGS aiming at gathering information regarding dropouts from the perspective of the students themselves. Thus, we seek to contribute to a broader reflection – within the academic community – about the roles played by each of the “actors” involved in the program and the issue of dropouts, being the actors the students, the professors, staff or alumni. In addition, we also envision contributing to advancements in the relationship between the university and the society, as well as to improvements in meeting the demands of the job market.
