Multiculturalismo no Canadá : a biblioteca pública canadense frente a diversidade cultural

Abstract

Estudo sobre a atuação das bibliotecas públicas canadenses frente à diversidade cultural e linguística existente no Canada. Identifica coleções, recursos e serviços multilíngues, e as atividades que as bibliotecas públicas canadenses promovem para a integração cultural, educacional e informacional das comunidades multiculturais. Compara os resultados ao documento IFLA Comunidades Multiculturais: diretrizes para o serviço bibliotecário (2009). A pesquisa foi do tipo descritiva, com abordagem quantitativa e qualitativa e utilizou como método o levantamento (survey) através de questionário estruturado com 9 questões fechadas e abertas. Os objetos do estudo foram as bibliotecas públicas localizadas nas 15 cidades canadenses com maior índice populacional de imigrantes. Os resultados demonstram que as coleções multilíngues são oferecidas entre 5 e 40 idiomas e nas línguas não oficiais mais faladas no país. O tipo de coleção multilíngue que mais se destaca é a de literatura adulta ficção, disponível em 92% das bibliotecas. Os recursos multilíngues predominantes nas bibliotecas analisadas são os formatos DVD, base de dados, CD e e-book, presentes em mais da metade da amostra. Quanto ao serviço de referência multilíngue, é realizado através de profissionais advindos de organizações parceiras das bibliotecas e através de softwares de tradução em 33% da amostra. Em 25% das bibliotecas o serviço de referência multilíngue é realizado através de funcionários das bibliotecas que dominam outros idiomas e através de documentos traduzidos. As informações sobre os recursos e serviços multilíngues disponíveis nas bibliotecas são fornecidas em 92% das bibliotecas através de contato com organizações que representam essas comunidades. As atividades de integração cultural mais promovidas são as celebrações de datas comemorativas canadenses, realizadas em 75% das bibliotecas e as celebrações de datas comemorativas de outras culturas, presentes em 67% das bibliotecas analisadas. As atividades de integração educacional com maior índice de oferta são referentes ao ensino e aperfeiçoamento das línguas oficiais canadenses, sendo os grupos de leitura em Inglês e/ou Francês oferecidos em 67% das bibliotecas, e os grupos de aprendizado dessas línguas em 58%. Os programas de integração informacional mais promovidos são os que se referem a questões como imigração e cidadania, oferecidos em 75% das bibliotecas públicas canadenses. Comparando os resultados obtidos nessa pesquisa com as diretrizes propostas pela IFLA, é possível inferir que as bibliotecas públicas canadenses promovem e preservam a diversidade cultural, atendendo as necessidades das comunidades multiculturais ao disponibilizar coleções, recursos e serviços multilíngues, bem como atividades de integração que reflitam suas expectativas. Considera-se que as bibliotecas públicas canadenses analisadas são um exemplo de boas práticas em serviços bibliotecários direcionados as comunidades multiculturais.

Study on the actions of the Canadian Public Libraries facing the cultural and linguistic diversity existing in Canada. Identifies multilingual collections, resources and activities promoted by the Canadian Public Libraries towards cultural, educational and informational integration of multicultural communities. Compares the results to IFLA Document Multicultural communities: guidelines for the Librarian service (2009). The research was a descriptive one, with a quantitative and qualitative approach, using survey as method, with research structured in nine open and closed questions. The object of this study were the Public Libraries at fifteen different Canadian cities with higher population rates of immigrants. The results demonstrate that the multilingual collections are available from five to forty different languages, in the non-official languages most widely spoken in the country. The kind of multilingual collection most present is fiction literature, available in 92% of the studied libraries. The predominant multilingual resources in the studied Libraries are the DVD formats, database, CD and e-book, present in more than half of the sample. Concerning the multilingual reference service, it is offered through professionals coming from organizations in partnership with the Libraries and also through translation softwares, present in 33% of the sample. In 25% of the Libraries the multilingual reference service is offered through the staff that speak other languages, and also through translated documents. The information about the multilingual resources and services available at the Libraries is offered in 92% of the Libraries through contact with organizations that represent the communities The activities for cultural integration that are most promoted are the celebration of Canadian commemorative dates, present in 75% of the Libraries, and the celebration of other cultures commemorative dates, present in 67% of the studied Libraries. The activities of educational integration that are most often offered are connected to the learning process of the two official languages in Canada, being the reading groups in English and/or French, offered in in 67% of the Libraries, and groups for learning those languages are present in 58% of them. The programs of informational integration that are most promoted are the ones that concern topics as immigration and citizenship, offered in 75% of the Public Canadian Libraries studied. Comparing the results obtained in this research with the guidelines proposed by IFLA, it is possible to infer that the Public Canadian Libraries promote and preserve the cultural diversity, answering the needs of multicultural communities by making available multilingual collections, resources and services, as well as integration activities that reflect the communities’ expectations. The Public Canadian Libraries analyzed are considered an example of good practices in library services towards multicultural communities.
