Estudo sobre os fundamentos morais do utilitarismo clássico : uma abordagem crítica

Abstract

O objetivo deste trabalho é fazer uma análise crítica dos fundamentos morais da teoria utilitarista desenvolvida por Jeremy Bentham e James Mill. Assumindo que a ciência econômica é um ramo da filosofia moral, veremos como a filosofia utilitarista responde as questões propostas por Sócrates sobre os fins humanos (individuais e sociais). Analisaremos a teoria social, a teoria psicológica e o cálculo da felicidade utilitarista. Partindo da separação proposta por Amartya Sen quanto à abordagem metodológica da teoria econômica entre ―ethics-related approach‖ e a ―engineering approach‖, investigar qual a relação do utilitarismo com esses dois tipos e como o seu legado filosófico influenciou as escolas do pensamento econômico posteriores, em especial à revolução marginalista, através de Jevons, e a escola neoclássica. Discorreremos também sobre sua influencia na prática política do século XIX. Ademais, listaremos as principais críticas dirigidas à filosofia utilitarista e ao ―engineering approach‖ da economia.

The objective of this study is to review the moral foundations of utilitarian theory developed by Jeremy Bentham and James Mill. Assuming that economics is a branch of moral philosophy, see how the utilitarian philosophy answers the questions posed by Socrates about the human purposes (individual and social). We look at social theory, psychological theory and the utilitarian calculus of happiness. Starting from the separation proposed by Amartya Sen as the methodological approach of economics between "ethics-related approach" and "engineering approach", we investigate the relationship of utilitarianism with these two types and how his legacy has influenced the philosophical schools of economic thought later, particularly in the marginal revolution, through Jevons, and the neoclassical school. Went on to describe his influence in the political practice of the nineteenth century. Also, list the main criticisms of the utilitarian philosophy and the "engineering approach" of the economy.
