Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)

Pancreatitis is the major disease of the exocrine pancreas in dogs, but the is no reliable estimates regarding its prevalence in this species. Pancreatitis can be a self-limiting disease, or induce severe complications, which can lead the animal to death. Recognized histologic forms include acute pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis with fibrosis tissue. Complications of acute pancreatitis include disseminated intravascular coagulation, renal failure and sepsis, chronic complications include exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and diabetes mellitus. Presumptive diagnosis can be given based on clinical presentation, hematological and biochemical profiles, pancreatic specific markers, urinalysis and imaging, but liver biopsy is the only diagnostic tool that can substantiate a definitive diagnosis of pancreatitis. The therapy is different for each clinical presentation and prognosis is very variable, depending on the presentation and response to treatment. This study was designed to conduct an update of pancreatitis in dogs, with the forms of presentation, diagnostic methods and treatments available today. ...
