A escola formalista na matemática e seu impacto sobre a ciência econômica

Abstract

Este trabalho tratará de analisar a teoria formalista na matemática e suas implicações na teoria econômica. Buscando contextualizar a escola, será feita uma exposição da Crise dos Fundamentos, assim como as demais escolas que, junto com a escola formalista, buscaram resolver esta crise. A tentativa formalista de resolver a Crise dos Fundamentos é frustrada pelo Teorema da Incompletude de Gödel, mas a utilização do modus operandi formalista seguiu de forma importante na teoria econômica. Será realizada uma descrição dos principais teóricos formalistas – David Hilbert, John von Neumann e Nicolas Bourbaki –, caracterizando os avanços realizados por eles. Mostraremos os desenvolvimentos de von Neumann e de Debreu aplicando o método formalista à teoria econômica. Será exposta a forma como a teoria formalista influenciou a teoria econômica, afastando-a da empiria e utilizando mais abstrações, como as modelagens. As críticas que surgiram pela aplicação destes métodos também serão objeto de análise.

This work seeks to analyze the mathematic formalist theory and its implications in economic theory. Seeking to contextualize this school, it will be done an exposition of the Mathematics Foundations Crisis, as the other schools that, with formalist school, tried to solve this crisis. The formalist attempt of solving the Foundations Crisis is frustrated by Gödel Incompleteness Theorem, but the formalistic modus operandi continued useful in mathematics. It will be realized a description of the main formalistic theorists – David Hilbert, John von Neumann and Nicolas Bourbaki –, characterizing the advances made by them. We will show von Neumann and Debreu development applying the formalistic method in economic theory. Will be shown the way that formalist theory influenced economic theory, moving it away from empirism and using more abstractions, as modeling. The critics that arise by the application of this methods will be analyzed too.
