A poética da dor : as funções das enfermidades em Pachinko

Abstract

Este trabalho analisa a obra Pachinko (2017), de Min Jin Lee, com foco nas enfermidades físicas e psíquicas presentes na narrativa, investigando suas funções simbólicas e estruturais na construção da trajetória dos personagens zainichi - coreanos residentes no Japão. Por meio da articulação entre literatura e história, com base em aportes teóricos como a metaficção historiográfica, procura compreender como a presença das doenças na narrativa ultrapassa seu aspecto clínico, operando como metáfora do sofrimento coletivo, das exclusões sociais e das feridas deixadas pela colonização, guerra e discriminação étnica. A análise destaca como enfermidades como a tuberculose, o alcoolismo, o câncer, as anomalias congênitas e as doenças sexualmente transmissíveis atuam como dispositivos narrativos de ruptura, revelação e transformação. Além disso, o trabalho mostra que tais condições atravessam gerações, moldando subjetividades e revelando a perpetuação da marginalização dos zainichi ao longo do século XX. Ao enfatizar a dor silenciosa, a exclusão institucional e a tentativa de assimilação frustrada, o estudo propõe que Pachinko opera como um espaço de memória literária e denúncia, oferecendo à literatura o papel de dar voz às histórias esquecidas nas narrativas vinculadas a uma historiografia orientada por um viés político e nacionalista.

This paper analyzes the novel Pachinko (2017), by Min Jin Lee, with a focus on the physical and psychological illnesses present in the narrative, investigating their symbolic and structural functions in shaping the trajectories of the Zainichi characters - Koreans residing in Japan. Through the articulation of literature and history, and drawing on theoretical frameworks such as historiographic metafiction, it seeks to understand how the presence of illness in the narrative transcends its clinical aspect, functioning as a metaphor for collective suffering, social exclusion, and the wounds left by colonization, war, and ethnic discrimination. The analysis highlights how illnesses such as tuberculosis, alcoholism, cancer, congenital anomalies, and sexually transmitted diseases operate as narrative devices of rupture, revelation, and transformation. Moreover, the study shows that these conditions span generations, shaping subjectivities and revealing the ongoing marginalization of the Zainichi throughout the twentieth century. By emphasizing silent pain, institutional exclusion, and failed attempts at assimilation, the study proposes that Pachinko functions as a space of literary memory and resistance, granting literature the role of giving voice to stories forgotten within narratives tied to a politically and nationalist-oriented historiography.
