Um tratado secularmente polêmico : uma revisão historiográfica do Tratado de Methuen de 1703

Abstract

O presente trabalho pretende revisar a historiografia sobre o tratado comercial firmado entre Inglaterra e Portugal em 1703, geralmente conhecido e referido por Tratado de Methuen ou Tratado de Panos e Vinhos, assim como a de seus antecedentes de caráter político-militar. Pretende-se analisar como essa historiografia alterou-se ao longo dos séculos, partindo de escritos de contemporâneos à firma e à vigência do tratado; até a obras de críticos do Século XX – que consagraram hipóteses não necessariamente verídicas a respeito das consequências de Methuen –; chegando na historiografia que revisitou paradigmas sobre o tratado, também do Século XX; e finalmente nas produções historiográficas do Século XXI. Paralelamente, buscou-se compreender o pensamento dos autores dessas obras sobre Methuen, situando-os na época e no contexto histórico em que produziram suas teses e hipóteses, com intuito de entender como esses condicionantes alteraram suas opiniões a respeito do tratado ao longo do tempo, e como e por que algumas visões polêmicas em relação aos impactos do Tratado de Methuen sobressaíram-se sobre outras, inclusive as atuais.

This present paper intends to revise the historiography of the commercial treaty firmed by England and Portugal in 1703, as well as the historiography about its previous political and military treaties, usually known and referred to as The Methuen Treaties. It is intended to analyse how this particular historiography altered itself troughtout the centuries, beggining with writtens by contemporaries of the firm and duration of the treaty; going throught works of critics from the 20th century – whom popularized not necessarily real hipothesys about the consequences of Methuen –; "arriving" at the historiography which revisited stabled beliefs about the treaty, that was also from the 20th century; and finally at the academic production from the 21st century. At the same time, comprehention of all those authors thinking about Methuen was seeked, trying to situate them at their historical context in which they produced their thesis, intending to understand how external factors influenced their thoughts of the treaty within the passing of time, as well as how and why some polemic visions about Methuen overtook others, even the actual ones.
