“Em nome do amor” : a instrumentalização do apoio aos direitos LGBTQIA+ por Israel como estratégia para legitimar o genocídio do povo palestino em Gaza

Abstract

Este trabalho aborda o discurso de apoio de Israel aos direitos LGBTQIA+ no contexto de sua guerra contra o povo palestino na Faixa de Gaza, iniciada em outubro de 2023. Desde meados da década de 2000, Israel tem investido em promover-se como um país acolhedor para pessoas LGBTQIA+, visando melhorar sua imagem internacional, frequentemente associada à repressão nos territórios palestinos ocupados, estratégia conhecida como pinkwashing. Nesse cenário, em outubro de 2023, Israel lançou sua maior ofensiva militar em Gaza, que é amplamente descrita como um processo de genocídio. Assim, a pesquisa é guiada pela seguinte questão: de que forma Israel utilizou o apoio aos direitos LGBTQIA+ durante o genocídio palestino em Gaza? A hipótese central sugere que o país recorreu ao pinkwashing para legitimar a ofensiva, destacando seu apoio à causa LGBTQIA+ e caracterizando a sociedade palestina como homofóbica. Assim, o trabalho tem como objetivo evidenciar o uso do pinkwashing por Israel nesse período, embasando-se na teoria queer, que inclui os conceitos de homonormatividade e homonacionalismo. Para isso, a pesquisa analisa declarações oficiais do governo israelense, incluindo publicações em mídia social e uma entrevista com o presidente israelense, Isaac Herzog. Como resultado, verifica-se que Israel utilizou ativamente o pinkwashing durante o genocídio em Gaza, associando a ofensiva à luta por direitos LGBTQIA+ e destacando a presença de soldados gays nas Forças de Defesa de Israel. Ademais, o país empregou narrativas que caracterizam a sociedade palestina como homofóbica, baseadas em lógicas colonialistas historicamente utilizadas como instrumentos de dominação. Por fim, constata-se que a pesquisa queer, ao explorar as dinâmicas de sexualidade em fenômenos internacionais, gera análises indispensáveis para o campo das Relações Internacionais.

This paper examines Israel's discourse of support for LGBTQIA+ rights in the context of its war against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, which began in October 2023. Since the mid2000s, Israel has invested in promoting itself as a welcoming country for LGBTQIA+ individuals, aiming to improve its international image, which is often associated with repression in the occupied Palestinian territories, a strategy known as pinkwashing. In this context, in October 2023, Israel launched its largest military offensive in Gaza, widely described as genocide. The research is guided by the following question: how did Israel use support for LGBTQIA+ rights during the Palestinian genocide in Gaza? The central hypothesis suggests that the country resorted to pinkwashing to legitimize the offensive, emphasizing its support for the LGBTQIA+ cause and portraying Palestinian society as homophobic. Accordingly, the study aims to highlight Israel’s use of pinkwashing during this period, drawing on queer theory, including the concepts of homonormativity and homonationalism. To this end, the research analyzes official statements from the Israeli government, including social media posts and an interview with Israeli president Isaac Herzog. The findings reveal that Israel actively employed pinkwashing during the Gaza genocide, linking the military action to the struggle for LGBTQIA+ rights and highlighting the presence of gay soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces. Additionally, Israel employed narratives characterizing Palestinian society as homophobic, rooted in colonialist logics historically employed as tools of domination. Lastly, the study demonstrates that queer research, by exploring the dynamics of sexuality in international phenomena, provides indispensable analyses for the field of International Relations.
