Por que remar contra a corrente? motivações e expectativas profissionais dos estudantes de licenciatura da Geografia da UFRGS

Abstract

A considerável diminuição na procura às licenciaturas ultimamente tem demonstrado a desvalorização dessa área frente à sociedade. No caso da Geografia esse esvaziamento se dá em ritmo acima da média. Vários são os fatores que desestimulam os estudantes a seguir a docência, vindos, paradoxalmente, inclusive de seus professores. Entretanto, o que moveu este trabalho foi a expectativa de conhecer melhor os estudantes que optam pela licenciatura em geografia. A partir das suas expectativas profissionais e suas motivações ao escolherem este curso de graduação, pode-se vislumbrar o lado positivo da docência, as realizações de um professor em sua lida diária. Para conhecer essas expectativas e motivações, foram aplicados questionários aos calouros e aos concluintes do curso de Geografia com ênfase em Licenciatura, somando vinte e três entrevistados. Ao compilar e descrever as respostas das quinze perguntas dos questionários, nos deparamos com seis pontos centrais que representam as motivações e as expectativas dos estudantes em relação a sua futura profissão. São eles: a possibilidade de obter conhecimento e repassá-lo, o exemplo dos bons professores no colégio, a pluralidade de assuntos discutidos na Geografia, o “olhar geográfico” que a ciência propõe, o atrativo mercado de trabalho e os contatos humanos do dia a dia da profissão. Esses fatores foram refletidos de maneira atida com a finalidade de problematizá-los e incitar discussões que nos levassem a compreender melhor esses estudantes que remam contra a corrente.

Lately, a considerable decrease in demand for a degree in education has shown the devaluation of this area against society. In the case of Geography this phenomenon occurs at a rate above average. There are several factors that discourage students to go into the education field and some of them came, paradoxically, from their teachers. However, what drove this study was the expectation of getting to know the expectations of the students that opted for a undergraduation degree in geography. Based on their professional expectations and motivations in choosing this course, one could envisage the positive side of teaching, the achievements of a teacher in their daily works. To meet these expectations and motivations, questionnaires were given to students coursing the first and the last semester of geography with an emphasis on the education in geography, in a total of twenty-three interviewed. To compile and describe the answers of the fifteen questions of the questionnaires, we came across six key points that represent the motivations and expectations of students regarding their future profession. They are: the possibility to gain knowledge and pass it, the example of good teachers in college, the plurality of topics discussed on geography, "a geographic look" that science offers, the attractive labor market and human contact of the day-to-day of the profession. These factors were reflected in order to problematize them and encourage discussions that would lead us to better understand these students paddling against the current.
