Abstract in Portuguese (Brasil)

Abstract
The most frequent disease that affects exocrine pancreas of dogs is pancreatitis. Pancreatitis evolution in domestic dogs can be acute or chronic. Usually, clinical signs are nonspecific, but they can include intense emesis, abdominal pain usually noticeable in the epigastric abdominal region, dehydration, weight loss, and other gastrointestinal signs. The final diagnosis uses histological analysis of the pancreas collected via biopsy, however it is not a common technique for this purpose. Abdo ...

The final diagnosis uses histological analysis of the pancreas collected via biopsy, however it is not a common technique for this purpose. Abdominal ultrasound and canine specific pancreatic lipase test (SNAP cPL® IDEXX) are more accessible methods to diagnose the condition. Treatment is symptomatic and includes supportive measures such as intravenous fluids, analgesia, use of antiemetic drugs, gastric protectors, and adequate nutrition. Prognosis for acute pancreatites can be quite adverse, depending on the severity of the clinical signs and early stage treatment. ...
