Paciente geriátrico canino : cuidados especiais para manutenção da qualidade de vida e promoção do bem-estar animal

Abstract

Os animais, bem como o ser humano, na medida em que vão envelhecendo também precisam de cuidados diferenciados e tratamentos especiais a fim de garantir seu bem-estar físico e mental. Hoje, com o avanço da medicina veterinária que inclui programas de prevenção a doenças, tratamentos mais eficazes e métodos diagnósticos mais precisos, os pacientes vivem mais tempo e com maior qualidade de vida. A geriatria é uma das especialidades que mais vem ganhando destaque nos últimos vinte anos pelas mudanças na demanda do mercado pet e considerações sociais que incluem os animais como membros da família. Desta forma, faz-se necessária a compreensão do processo de envelhecimento por parte do tutor e que o clínico saiba identificar e interpretar os sinais do passar da idade em seus pacientes. Este trabalho acadêmico revisa o impacto do envelhecimento no comportamento orgânico, incluindo as principais afecções resultantes dele e discute os melhores métodos para lidar com o paciente senil clinicamente, desde sua abordagem precoce até sua fase terminal e o apoio à família no momento do adeus.

Animals, as well as humans, as they age also need special care and special treatments in order to guarantee their physical and mental well-being. Today, with the advancement of Veterinary Medicine that includes disease prevention programs, more effective treatments and more accurate diagnostic methods, patients live longer and have a better quality of life. Geriatrics is one of the specialties that has been gaining more prominence in the last twenty years due to changes in the demand of the pet market and social considerations that include animals as members of the family. Thus, it is necessary for the tutor to understand the aging process and for the clinician to be able to identify and interpret the signs of aging in their patients. This academic work reviews the impact of aging on organic behavior, including the main conditions resulting from it and discusess the best methods to deal with the senile patient clinically, from his early approach to his terminal phase and support to the family at the time of goodbye.
