Visões da menopausa : da abordagem médica à experiência vivida

Abstract

A partir da interação entre aspectos biológicos e culturais, a medicina produziu diferentes interpretações sobre o corpo feminino no decorrer do tempo, com grande interesse na capacidade reprodutiva. Com o aumento da longevidade, que permite às mulheres viverem boa parte de suas vidas após a cessação das funções ovarianas, o saber médico voltou seu olhar ao climatério e à menopausa, transformando suas características, antes lidas como inerentes ao envelhecimento, em sintomas de uma doença que, como tal, necessita de intervenção. A partir disso, o presente trabalho teve como proposta analisar as origens e as transformações da visão médica acerca da menopausa, além dos efeitos sobre a percepção de mulheres que vivenciam o processo. Para tanto, foi realizada pesquisa bibliográfica, análise do conteúdo de um podcast feito por especialistas de endocrinologia e ginecologia, além de entrevistas com uma ginecologista responsável pelas questões de saúde da mulher da rede pública de um município do interior do estado de São Paulo e com três de suas pacientes. Entre os resultados, são destacados os ecos da linguagem patologizante sobre processos fisiológicos femininos desde a medicina do século XIX, bem como a alta carga de pressupostos culturais que orientam, ainda hoje, o modelo médico-científico de produção do conhecimento.

Through the interaction between biological and cultural aspects, medicine has produced different interpretations of the female body over time, with hight interest in reproductive capacity. From the increase in longevity, that allows women to live big part of their lives after the cessation of ovarian functions, the medical knowledge has turned its attention to climacteric and menopause, transforming their characteristics, previously seen as inherent to aging, into symptoms of a illness that needs intervention. From these points, the present work intended to analyze the origins and transformations of the medical view about menopause, in addition to the effects of this view on the perception of women who experience the process. To do that, a bibliographical research and a analysis of a podcast produced by endocrinology and gynecology specialists were carried out, and interviews with a gynecologist responsible for women's public health service of a city located in the interior of the state of São Paulo and with three of his patients were also done. Among the results, we can highlight the echoes of pathologizing language about female physiological processes since nineteenth-century medicine, as well as the high load of cultural assumptions that guide the medical knowledge production up to the present.
