Futebol e neoliberalismo : um embate para além das quatro linhas

Abstract

Este trabalho buscou investigar a construção e a consolidação do neoliberalismo como hegemonia, nos termos de Robert Cox (1981), no Reino Unido durante o período de governo de Margaret Thatcher (1979-1990); com o objetivo de compreender as transformações vividas pela sociedade e pelo sujeito desse tempo. Nesse sentido, o futebol, em suas dimensões políticas e sociais, serviu como elemento base para identificar as disputas entre modelos de racionalidade distintos que passam se chocar neste período de transição. Neste sentido, este trabalho, a partir da proposição teórica de Robert Cox, busca investigar este processo vivido pela sociedade inglesa que marcou uma inflexão em sua história, para isso realizando uma análise qualitativa de bibliografia sobre o tema discutido. A pergunta de pesquisa que dá origem a este trabalho é: entendendo o futebol como um fenômeno social, e utilizando-o como um proxy para a análise, quais foram os embates e transformações sociais presentes no processo de consolidação da hegemonia neoliberal no Reino Unido a partir do governo de Margaret Thatcher? Como resposta provisória ao problema de pesquisa a ser discutida ao longo do estudo, tem-se como hipótese que: durante o governo de Margaret Thatcher, como resultado da busca por construir uma nova racionalidade, baseada num modelo de sujeito individualizado e maximizador do seu autointeresse – a qual era necessária para a consolidação da hegemonia neoliberal –, o futebol foi palco de ações governamentais que visavam desmobilizar movimentos coletivos e populares, além de criminalizar as torcidas. O objetivo geral da pesquisa é entender, a partir do futebol, quais foram os embates e transformações sociais presentes no processo de consolidação da hegemonia neoliberal na Inglaterra a partir do governo de Margaret Thatcher. Ao longo do trabalho, foram encontrados dados que apontam para uma ativa luta traçada pelo governo Thatcher para transformar o futebol no país. A identidade do jogo, atrelada de maneira muito próxima à classe trabalhadora, era contrastante com o novo modelo de existência pregado pelo neoliberalismo. Deste modo, a criminalização e a repressão das torcidas, que culminaram em um novo modo de se viver o ambiente do futebol, atrelado ao consumo, foram fundamentais para a remodelação da sociedade.

This essay was made to investigate the neoliberalism’s building and the consolidation as an hegemony, in Robert Cox’s (1983) terms, in the United Kingdom during Margaret Thatcher’s term (1979-1990); aiming to understand the transformations in the society and in the individual of this moment. In that sense, football, in its political and social dimensions, will serve as a base element for identifying the disputes between rationality models that start to shock in this transitional period. The research question, therefore, will be: considering football as a social space, and utilizing it as a proxy for the analysis, which were the social transformations that were present in neoliberal hegemony’s constitution in the United States from Margaret Thatcher’s term? As an answer to this research question, the hipothesys developed is: during Thatcher’s term, as a result from a tentative to build a new rationality, based in a new subject model, individualized and self-interested – that was necessary for the neoliberal hegemony consolidation – football was the stage of governmental actions aiming to demobilize collective and popular movements, and criminalize football fans. The project’s objective is to understand, through football, which were the clashes and transformations presents in the neoliberal hegemony consolidation in the United Kingdom. For this reason, this essay, starting from Cox’s the theorical contributions, aims to investigate this process that English society was submitted to that changed its history. To do this, a qualitative analyst of bibliography about the chose theme was made. During the research, data that points to an active fight launched by Thatcher’s government aiming to transform football in the country. The game’s identity, aligned with the working class, was contrasting with the new model of life and existence preached by neoliberalism. For this reason, fans criminalization and repression, that leaded to a new way of experiencing football, bonded to consumption, were fundamental to society’s remodeling.
