L'écriture de l'histoire au Brésil au XIXe siècle : essai sur une rhétorique de la nacionalité : Le cas Varnhagen

Abstract

Le but de cette étude est d'analyser l'évolution de l'écriture de l'histoire au Brésil au XIXe siècle. Spécifiquement, nous essayons de comprendre comment l'histoire a construit une rhétorique de la nationalité en même temps qu'elle se définissait elle-même comme discipline scientifique, ayant pour base la production historiographique issue de l'Institut Historique et Géographique Brésilien (IHGB) et de l'oeuvre de Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen (1816-1878), le plus important historien brésilien de la période. Le travail a été divisé en trois parties: Dans la première partie, on cherche à reconstituer le réseau qui se crée à partir de l'IHGB. Pour mener à bien cet examen, nous avons commencé par une étude de la composition sociale de l'IHGB et de ses statuts, puis des rapports de l'institution avec l'empereur et le mouvement romantique. Dans la deuxième partie, nous essayons de suivre ou d'établir certaines étapes de la généalogie du concept d'histoire, tel qu'il s'ébauche durant cette période. Nous avons isolé quatre éléments pour menerà bien l'analyse: le discours fondateur de l'IHGB; la question de la géographie comme concept aidant à construire une identité historienne; le rôle de la biographie comme variation du genre historique; et, finalement, les projets historiographiques, dont l'objectif est de proposer des modèles pour écrire l'histoire du Brésil. Enfin, la troisième partie est entièrement consacrée au cas Varnhagen.

The goal of this study is to analyse the evolution of the ways of writing history in Brazil during the nineteenth century. Through examining the production of the Brazilian Geographical and Historical Institute (IHGB) and the work of Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen, the most important historian of that period, we can try to understand how history can construct a rhetoric of nationality, and at the same time define itself as a scientific discipline. I have divided my study into three parts. In the first one, I have searched to reconstitute the network originated from the IHGB with special emphasis ou the social composition of its members, on the statutes of this institution, on its relations with the Emperor and with the Romantic Movement. In the second part, I have retraced the genealogy of the concept of history outlined during this period. Four elements are taken into consideration: the founding speech of the IHGB, the function of geography as a concept helping to construct the identity of history, the role of biography as a variation of the genre of history, and finally the historiographical projects, whose aims are to propose models for the writing of the history of Brazil. The third and last part is entirely dedicated to the study of the Varnhagen case.
