The aim of this study was to evaluate the oral health status of morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery at the Conceição Hospital, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, between September 2009 and May 2010. Thirty participants were interviewed with a questionnaire assessing general health, oral health and sociodemographic data. Dental examinations were carried out to evaluate visible dental plaque, gingival bleeding, dental caries following the ICDAS (International Caries Detection and Assessment System) classification, dental prosthetic use and oral mucosa evaluation following the WHO criteria. All participants provided signed informed consents. The majority of the participants were females (96,7%) and the mean age of the participats was 44,17 (± 10,56). There were a high percentage of the examined dental surfaces presenting visible plaque (63,3%) and gingival bleeding (24,6%). Furthermore, participants exhibited increased figures of untreated dental caries and oral mucosa lesions. In conclusion, the oral health of the participants of the present study was shown to be poor, as characterized by the elevated numbers of untreated dental caries, plaque and gingivitis. Thus, adding a Dentist to the multiprofessional team caring for the morbidly obese patient may represent a further step towards the provision of comprehensive health care for these persons. ...
