The Latin American short story, nowadays, is a kind ofartistic representation capable of pointing out significant directions of the literatures produced in specific regions or countries, and so, of contributing to literary national identity formations. This question in discussed here through the analysis of the anthology Os cem melhores contos brasileiros do século XX (2000), organized by Italo Moriconi. We show that the short-story trajectory in Brazil, throughout the century, accompanies the Brazilian society's changes and its repercussions on the behavior and the psychology of individuals. At the same time, the form of the short story gradually abandons traditional models by innovative procedures.en
